Khmer New Year - 2006

Happy New Year!
The New Year celebration is the largest and most significant annual cultural event for the Cambodian community, both at home and abroad. It shows the resilience of our people and culture, especially for those of us living far away from the Motherland. The Executive Committee of the Cambodian Society in the United Kingdom (CASUNIK) convey their best wishes to all Cambodian and Friends, both inside and outside Cambodia, for a Happy and Prosperous New year.

May You have Long Life, Beauty, Good Health, Strength and Wisdom!

According to the tradition, the Cambodian New Year celebration lasts for 3 days. The first day (14th April 2006 at 0 hr 48min) is the beginning of the celebration, the second day is the Middle Day (Blind Date) and the third one is the Day when the name of the New Year (i.e. Chnam Chawr - Year of the Dog ) effectively starts.

CASUNIK will celebrate the traditional Cambodian New Year on Saturday 9th April 2006.

This year, we are rather fortunate in having some of the members of our Community to show their talents in the traditional dances: Wishing Dance, Coconut Dance, Worldly Flower Dance, Ballet & Tap Dancing, Pestle Dance, Hanuman & the Golden Fish Dance, Fan Dance and some songs. The Cambodian students who come to study in the UK would like to present the Chol Chhoung.

Some of them are ex-professional dancers, some have been taught by their mothers and some of them have just been learning from last October. Many thanks to Mr Pich Kakada who has kindly been teaching these fast learners!

The gift from H.E Chan Ven and his wife, a full set of costume and jewellery for the Dance Group, from Mrs Preap Samkol, 2 dresses (sampot chong kben) are very much appreciated. Thanks to Mr Sokphal Din for bringing the costume for the Coconut Dance from Cambodia. We will remember their kindness and think of them during the performance.
