Annual General Report 2008

We have an exciting year with some changes

General Election
It was held on 17th February 2008 at the VLC Community Centre for a new selected management committee in order to make progress.

Khmer New Year
It was held on Saturday 12th 2008 at the VLC Community Centre.
The programme comprised of three parts:

  • Buddhist Ceremonies
    • Under the supervision of Mr Tan Nam
    • 10.00am arrival of Khmer community members and guests
    • 10.15am arrival of Sangha monks, Ajhan Sumetho
    • Request of the five Precepts
    • Chanting, blessing by the Sangha monks
    • 11.30am offering of alms food to the Sangha monks
    • 12.30pm Buffet lunch
    • 1.30pm Dhamma Talk, by Ajahn Sumetho
  • Traditional Celebration (from 2.00pm)
    • Presented by Raksmey Muong and Sam Ol
    • Apsara Dance performed by Kunthea (from Belgium)
    • Blessing dance by Dinal, Sinuon and Chantrea Blomfield
    • Khmer popular (Prachea Prey) and Hanuman dance by Kakada Pich and Kunthea
    • Musical entertainment:
      • Performed by our home-grown team Sokhom Hun and Carl Hopkins from Liverpool (Khmer songs)
      • Performed by Daniele Owen and Sam A Ruos (jazz/blues/pop acoustic-set)
  • Evening Gathering
    • Buffet
    • Live performance by our professional singers Da Yanny So and Kammarath Lee Kimson (Khmer songs) and again Sokhom Hun and Carl Hopkins, Daniele Owen and Sam A Ruos.

    We are honoured by the numbers of guests attended that day including HE Hor Nambora, his family and all members of the Royal Embassy of Cambodia, Mr Khan the speaker of council of Hackney, Mr Huong Kim Le chairman of VLC, Hackney local news team, our seniors Mr and Mrs Mien Tan and family, Mr and Mrs Moeng Phok, Mr and Mrs Sambath, Mr and Mrs Tan Chea, Mrs Pak Neari Ruos and family, Miss Sok Chheun, Mr and Mrs Mea Bou together with our compatriots from Kent.

    Special thanks to the catering team organised by Mrs Bopha Pak Samay, Mrs Viceka Ros, Miss Muy Eng, Mrs Mulivuth Sambath and Mrs Sivna Tan, and to all participating members who had such long journey around the UK and abroad.

    It was a successful day with strong supports from all members and guests around the UK.

May 2008
To show our appreciation for all the help and supports of the students who contributed their time in hall decoration prior to the New Year celebration we had organised a BBQ private party at Mrs Sobopha Owen’s home in Hampshire. It was a successful event. Approximately 35 people attended

June 2008
A summer disco party was held on Saturday 28th June. Our aim was to link Cambodian Student Association in the UK with Casunik community. It started from 6.30pm with buffet and followed by disco and Roam Vung, Roam Kbach until midnight

August 2008
The lost of Mr Pen Tay
The Cambodians in the UK are deeply sad by the lost of our old member Mr Pen Tay who passed away on 17th August 2008. The funeral was held on Wednesday 3rd of September at 2.00pm Medway Crematorium, Kent.

Pchum Ben (Saturday 4th 2008)
Every year we celebrate our traditional remembrance day at Amaravatti Buddhist Monastry. Each brought their own dishes to the temple for offering to the monks and chanting prayers for the memory of ancestors. Followed by a Special Meeting for feedbacks and presenting report from the new committee for the year 2008.

The new committee has set up a target for quarterly meetings at the VLC Community Centre in order to keep the management committee updated with latest progress and future projects.
